MONK-1

twelve singers for the FM-1, in the browser: the same code the FM-1 runs

Turn your phone sideways to see the whole FM-1, or scroll it sideways.

Velocity –, aftertouch – Off. Sound starts when you switch it on.

The screen, in words

Read the screen

MONK-1's screen reader support, as on the FM-1 with the FM-1 screen reader: what the screen shows is said as it changes (pages, knobs as you turn them, the singer, messages). The pictures of the singers are not described. This page's voice is eSpeak NG (GPL-3.0), running in the page.

Playing

  • The keys sing, one voice: the newest key held sounds; let go and it falls back to the one under it, gliding.
  • Velocity sets the note's level: click lower on a key for more.
  • Aftertouch moves the vowel: drag down on a held key. (The seven keys at the right end, C♯ to G, have no aftertouch on the FM-1, so none here either.)
  • PRESETS the singer, ALGORITHM the vowel, OCT− / OCT+ the octave.
  • PLAY HOLD: the note stays after the key.

Pages

  • A button per set of knobs: HOME Sing, EDIT Choir, LFO Vibrato, FX Echo, ENV Envelope, GLO Touch.
  • KNOB 1–4 the page's knobs. Touching a knob or a page button shows the menu over the singer.
  • SAVE saves (it also saves by itself); held 1.5 s, this singer's voice goes back to how it came.

Mouse, touch, keyboard

  • Tab moves through the FM-1's controls: the knobs, the buttons, then the keys from the lowest.
  • A knob: ↑ ↓ (or ← →) turn it, Page Up Page Down faster.
  • A button: hold Space or Enter to hold it down (SAVE held 1.5 s resets the singer).
  • A key: hold Space or Enter to sing it, at the keyboard velocity; while it sings, ↑ ↓ press harder or lighter (aftertouch).
  • Drag a knob up or down, or scroll over it.
  • Keys: click lower for more velocity, drag down for aftertouch. A pen's own pressure works too. Several fingers at once on a touch screen.
  • Shortcuts, while the focus is on the FM-1 (after Switch on, or a click on it): A–' the white keys from F, W E R Y U O P [ the black ones, at the keyboard velocity and aftertouch set below the FM-1; hold Shift to press harder. Space HOLD, Z / X OCT− / OCT+, Esc HOME, ↑ ↓ the singer, ← → the vowel (not on a knob, or on a key you are holding). (turn them off if they get in the way of your screen reader's own keys)
  • Shift-click (or right-click) a button to hold it down, click again to let go.

Saving

Your changes to each singer are kept in this browser, as the FM-1 keeps them in its memory. Factory reset forgets them. It is the firmware, not a recording: what you hear is MONK-1 running, at the FM-1's 44.1 kHz. The voice is MonkSynth by Jonathan Taylor, the singers come from its iOS port. The idea of running FM-1 firmware in the browser comes from Groove OS's emulator.
